hand in hand he takes me

alone through the dark

i stumble backward

and become afraid

if he lets go

i will fall

his grip loosens

as mine tightens

he lets go

i hear voices

we were alone

who is there

where am i going

why can’t i stop falling

i cry out

be still he says

calm and stand

i reach out in the dark

his hand is there

our fingers intertwine
